Families Hiding during the Holocaust

Page history last edited by Piglet 13 years, 11 months ago

During the Holocaust, families hid in houses, ghettos, and  forest because they wanted to be protected from the nazi’s and this was the way to do so. One way of hiding was under religion so people were not killed they would lie and tell the Germans they were other religions but Jewish. Places that people normally hid were in homes or barns if families lived in rural areas. One young girl, Anne Frank, was a child who hid in her attic and documented what she would do each day in a journal she received for her thirteenth birthday the day before her family went into hiding. Hiding for many Jewish families was their only option. Not only for Jewish Families but for other families as well, but hiding was a way to stay alive during this horrendous period of time.

Hiding Places:

Hiding during the Holocaust was something that could keep people alive. One Holocaust survivor states, “My name is Clara Kramer and I am a survivor of the Holocaust, and I am alive today because one righteous Christian family risked their lives to save us” (Clara Kramer). Many families would hide in homes in places such as closets, attics, and cellars (Hidden Children). Others that could not hide in these places would hide in the forest. Many that hid here would build forest huts to blend in and make their hiding places look natural (Hidden Children). People that lived in more rural areas would mainly hide in barns (Hidden Children). Some larger families that stayed together hid in chicken coops spread out inside the barns (Hidden Children). As the Holocaust survivor Clara Kramer stated, “ one righteous Christian family risked their lives to save us,” which goes to show that the Jewish religion helped other families in hiding by taking them in.

Anne Frank:

Anne Frank was a thirteen year old child that lived during the Holocaust. When the Holocaust started, her family decided to hide themselves for two years before they were found (Rosenblatt). They went into hiding on July 6, 1942 (Anne Frank). The day before, on Anne’s thirteenth birthday, she received a diary (Anne Frank). Anne  stated, “Even though Anne sees hiding as an exciting adventure in the beginning, soon enough the hiding place becomes too small for her restless character” (Anne Frank). On August 4, 1944 a secret annex which is a hiding place or room, was raided by security police and Anne and seven others are arrested (Anne Frank). Once arrested, they are taken to concentration camps in Poland, Holland and Germany (Anne Frank).

because this is where the diary was written.)

How families hid:

Some may wonder how families could possibly hide the fact that they were Jewish? Many  people who were Jews would hide under religion (Hidden Children ). For example, “Not all Jewish children could pass as “Ayrans” and enjoy relative freedom of movement outside”(Hidden Children) Many Catholics would shelter Jews and the smaller families that did not have much hiding space would only shelter Jewish children (Hidden Children). During bombings, children had to stay hidden, not being able to flee to shelter (Hidden Children). Because families were rather large during this time period and had lack of hiding space, many families were separated (Hidden Children). Most of the kids went into hiding alone because they did not want to hide in the ghettos. This was a tougher time for the children than it was for the adults.
